of poh piah...
last weekend, david and i decided to host a little house-warming sorta thing since we moved into the new apartment and no one's really been here yet. we decided to make poh-piah for everyone cos i've been wanting to try making poh piah the whole summer, but never really got down to it.
we substituted the turnips in the xian with white carrots cos we couldnt find them around here. after much grating and cutting and frying, we found to our greatest horror that it was super bitter (cos of the white carrots)! we added more of everything - sugar, soy sauce, tau-cheo, salt, pepper - to the mixture since nothing could be worse than the bitterness already but it din help very much.. finally, david suggested to just throw in the shallots we fried earlier. it was 3am by then (we started at 11pm) and we were pretty fed up le.. so we just covered the mixture and went to sleep..
we woke up the next day to taste our xian.. walah! it was bitter no more and it actually tastes like pohpiah xian! =) YAY! muahahaha! success! we thought last night that we probably couldnt serve pohpiah given the bitterness, and had to order pizza or something! YAY! *beams with pride*
and soon kueh...! :)
been craving for soon kueh for the longest time.. the closest i could find was a fried version of gu-cai kueh at a thai restaurant. my thai friends were in charge of ordering of course and yeah, i was so grateful they knew thai and good food!
i suggested to david to make soon kueh over the weekend and lucky for us, he was onz enough about it! got the ingredients (we found turnips this time!) and got down to work friday afternoon.. we engaged charles' help when he came over to bum after class..
here's charles flattening the dough with our improvised beer-bottle rolling pin:
